Message from the Director
Glad you’re still with us as we continue the celebration of our 20th anniversary! This issue is rushing in at a fast and furious
pace with an article on speed networking; an illuminating and somewhat lunatic keynote talk by Guy Kawasaki on technology
and social behavior from May’s 20th anniversary symposium; an examination into the upsides and downsides of social networking; and
a glimpse at this year’s incoming class. Plus, we’ll take a look back at some EMTM alumni and find out how they came to the
program and got where they are. >>more

Opportunity and Risk in the Age of Social Networks
In a thought-provoking panel held at the symposium, panelists examined many of the top social networking sites (MySpace, Facebook,
Twitter) and talked about how companies are increasingly using social media to engage customers. “No industry is absolved
from the impact of emerging media and technologies,” said Steven Ennen, managing director of the Wharton Interactive Media Initiative.
“There is a lot in play in the online ecosystem... An understanding of the intricacies and
possibilities is critical.”

May 22. By turns serious and seriously silly, Kawasaki discussed, among many other things, the utility of Twitter and the
recession’s hidden values for entrepreneurs. Read on to see his “top ten (plus one)” tips on innovation... and hold on to your hats!

A Most Impressive Group Gets Oriented
“EMTM’s newest class is the largest, most highly credentialed incoming class we’ve had since I have been director, and
we kept them energized with a creative and diverse program of activities,” said Dr. Dwight Jaggard. That August program included
a Speed Networking event, the Teamwork and Leadership and Introduction to Case Studies classes, and the Emerging Technologies
Seminar (ETS). Get-togethers over lunch, dinner and late-night drinks followed, as did opportunities
to meet with alumni and faculty.
