A House Divided: The Role of Technology, Strategy, Organization, and Culture in the Subprime Crisis
Last issue, we saw how automation may have played a role in the subprime meltdown. Now we examine how strategy,
organization and culture contributed to the collapse. Raj Rajkotia, EMTM ‘07, found himself living the issues he
studied in his IT Strategy course as part of the post-merger team (Countrywide Financial and Bank of America). Raj says
that the lack of integration among the different parts of the mortgage business contributed to the subprime crisis.

and alumni struggle with these issues, one alumnus is focusing on making energy consumption more efficient. Fred Maiden,
‘01, started Energy Research Solutions, a non-profit whose main goal is to stop the flaring of natural gas worldwide
by 2020. What is flaring and why is it bad?

can help recognize these patterns by identifying key drivers and strategic uncertainties often, the difference between rapid response

Diversity, Collaboration and Math Boot Camp and This Was Only Orientation!
For four days in August, new EMTM students had an experience that ran the gamut from statistics to team building to classroom etiquette
to math boot camp. A few, like David Proctor, found it to be “very exciting
and daunting at the same time, but... we are all in the same boat.” For some, however, that boat is traveling farther than others:
first-year student Alex Shkrebelo is commuting from Russia.
