EMTM Prof. Alex van Putten offers insights into one of the applications of Real Options Analysis. Alex is one
of the faculty who teach in the EMTM core course, The Management of Technological Innovation.
Opportunity Engineering (“OE”) provides the process whereby managers can effectively drive top
line growth through deliberate innovation. OE is a mindset as much as it is a process that leads managers
away from “Go/No Go” decision making towards a more fluid style when dealing with uncertain
business investments that in turn leads to an agile corporate culture. Research has shown that there is no
relationship between top line growth and R&D spending, and this is because the culture in most companies
is not conducive to bringing new products and services to the market. OE is a straightforward tool that
creates the cultural change needed to really innovate by bringing project management into the 21st century.
Alexander van Putten is an affiliated faculty member at the Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania, where
he lectures on entrepreneurial management. Currently he is a managing director of Cameron & Associates LLC, which
consults globally on issues relating to strategy and innovation. Clients include Boeing, ATT, AMP and SCG, among
others. Prior to teaching, Alex was a general partner in a successful arbitrage firm, and senior vice president of
Chrysler Capital Realty where he was responsible for the company’s national real estate investments. He is
published in the Harvard Business Review and the author of Unlocking Opportunities for Growth.
EMTM Presents is for anyone interested in trends and issues at the intersection of technology
and business. The evening includes the opportunity to meet and talk with EMTM faculty, students and alumni at
an informal reception that precedes the lecture and Q&A.

“Managers today are using the conceptual tools from the 1950's to make decisions in our increasingly
competitive and complex business environment and it puts them at a disadvantage. We are trying to
rectify that with an updated tool set.”
