Firms are responding to the effects of the recession in varying ways. Some are action-oriented, vigorously
identifying the elements of uncertainty they face, conducting a process of dynamic monitoring and continuing
to build on their pre-recession strategies. What are the elements of corporate culture that enable some firms
to maintain their agility and resilience in such times? Is your firm utilizing techniques like real options
analysis to create alternative options for growth? Or is your firm risk averse locked in an institutional
paralysis that reduces its ability to maintain competitiveness and employee morale?
Drawing on her experience in the area of scenario planning, EMTM Prof. Kathy Pearson offers her insights on
the characteristics and techniques that successful firms deploy in times of uncertainty. Kathy Pearson, Ph.D.
is a senior consultant and director of Executive Development for Decision Strategies International (DSI), a
management consulting firm focused on scenario-based strategic planning and decision making. In addition, Dr.
Pearson serves as an adjunct associate professor in the Operations and Information Management Department at
the Wharton School. She has taught operations management courses in the MBA and EMTM programs as well as
Probability and Statistics, Simulation Modeling, and other courses for the department and the University of
Pennsylvania. In 2006, Dr. Pearson was honored with the “Goes above and beyond the call of duty”
award by the 2007 Wharton MBA class.
EMTM Presents is for anyone interested in trends and issues at the intersection of technology and business.

“A year ago, I couldn’t get a group of real estate executives to take a scenario in which housing prices
fell seriously. Now, everyone is willing to imagine a future in which anything might go.”
