How to Save Time on Your EMTM Application
A few suggestions and resources to help you complete your application by final deadline of May 15.
- Open an online application account. If you haven't created an account already,
log-on to EMTM's secure online application.
All the instructions you need can be found online, including how to send electronic requests for recommendations.
- Get a head start on items that require gathering information or asking for others' input.
This includes background information on your Education and Employment, as well as your Recommendation providers.
Good news: For academic transcripts, while you need to provide comprehensive information
on your academic background, you do not need to have official transcripts submitted at the time of your application.
You can upload the information or forward copies of your transcripts. (Official transcripts will be required before
matriculating, but can be requested from your institutions after receiving notification of your admissions decision.)
- Contact your two (2) Professional Recommenders as soon as possible. Select two supervisors
or professional colleagues who can attest to your abilities, work experience and leadership potential. Discuss
your plans with them, so that they understand how you see EMTM fitting into your career aspirations.
Suggestion: Encourage your recommenders to submit their recommendations online when
they are notified by e-mail through the EMTM application system. Follow up with a call or e-mail a few days before
the deadline. (If your recommender prefers, a hard copy of the Recommendation form may be downloaded, completed,
and faxed directly to the EMTM office. Instructions are provided in the online system.)
- Schedule your GMAT or GRE now.* The EMTM application includes a GMAT or GRE score from within
the past 5 years. Both tests are equally acceptable, and these test scores are considered in the context of your full
application profile and work experience.
Timing note: GMAT/GRE tests may be taken through May 30 for applications submitted by
May 15. Your test should be scheduled at the time you submit your application.
Suggestions and Resources: See our
"Tips for Taking the GMAT/GRE" (180KB PDF). Check online at
www.mba.com (for GMAT) or
www.gre.org (for GRE) to find out about testing locations, dates,
and availability. These websites also provide free preparation resources and sample tests.
* A GMAT/GRE test waiver may be requested for those applicants with 15 or more years of technology-related work
experience or a Ph.D., M.D. or equivalent degree in the physical sciences, mathematics, engineering, or similar quantitative
area. The waiver is based on a review of transcripts for all coursework, with particular emphasis on prior coursework in
mathematics and other quantitative disciplines. Applicants who are seeking a waiver are encouraged to apply early in the
process to allow sufficient time to schedule the GMAT/GRE should it be deemed necessary.)
- Explore funding options. Financial sponsorship by your firm is not a requirement for admission to EMTM; however, you will likely want to explore both corporate funding opportunities and educational loans.
Suggestions and Resources: See Program Costs and Funding for additional information and resource links. Download EMTM's Sponsor Briefing (PDF, 160kb), a document you can share with your supervisor. You can also request EMTM's "Tips for Requesting Sponsorship" by emailing: emtm-admissions@emtm.upenn.edu
-
Allow time to think (but not obsess) about your answers to the essay questions. Your essay answers do not need to be long — and we are not looking for prize-winning prose. What the Admissions Committee will look for is your own thoughtful assessment of why EMTM would be a good choice for you at this point in your career.

Questions? Call or e-mail: 215-898-2897 or emtm-admissions@emtm.upenn.edu. Paige Harker, Admissions Manager, can provide information and answer your questions. We would also be happy to put you in touch with EMTM students and alumni with similar backgrounds, industries or situations. They can answer questions and share candid insights based on their own experience.
